Juanillo (Cap Cana)
The most photographed beach in the area, deservedly: turquoise water, white sand, leaning palms and a bottom you can see from shore. It's inside Cap Cana, so it's quieter and more exclusive than the resort beaches. About 25 minutes from the airport.
Playa Macao
The best-known public beach here: bigger swell than Bavaro, wide sand, a wilder feel. It's where people go who want to see the actual sea, not a pool with a view. Local vendors and a few food stalls.
Arena Gorda and Bavaro beach
The strip where most large resorts sit: calm water, almost no waves, wide sand, services everywhere. Ideal with kids or if you want to stay close to your hotel. Less adventure, more comfort.
Uvero Alto
Further north, past Bavaro. Less built up, resorts more spread out, beaches emptier. About 50 minutes from the airport — it's not close to anything else.
Frequently asked
Can you visit Juanillo without staying there?
Yes, the beach is accessible. It's a private area, so a booked transfer is best — you don't want to be stranded at the gate waiting for a ride.
Which beach is calmest?
Juanillo in Cap Cana, and the Uvero Alto beaches. Bavaro and Arena Gorda are busier because that's where the big resorts are.
